When you are first starting out with playing guitar you definitely need to have your own equipment such as a guitar and amp.  The trouble is, when you are just a beginning guitar player, what exactly do you need?  Where do you even start?  Well, luckily there are companies out there in the guitar world that have released just the thing for beginner guitarists - a beginner guitar pack.

There are many different beginner guitar packs available online and offline at your local guitar and music shop.  These combination packages will give you just about everything you need including a guitar, amplifier, case or gig bag for your guitar, strap to hold your guitar while playing, strings, and some even include educational materials to get you started such as instructional books and dvd's.

Now, with the amount of packs out there, it can be a bit overwhelming on which one you choose.  My recommendation would be to start with a well known guitar company such as Fender or Ibanez.  Both have a couple of excellent options for beginner guitar packs and there is lots of choice between the types of packs available.

Now, if you are not sure which one to buy, the best thing to do is compare each of the different options available to you and go from there.  First off, look at the guitar in each pack:

The best thing to do when looking at the guitar is if you have the option is to try it out and see if it feels comfortable to hold.  Since you are a beginner, you may not know how to play anything yet but you can at least get a feel for each guitar by holding them in the playing position and feeling which is the most comfortable.

The next thing is the amp.  Chances are you will only need a small practice amp for now since you probably won't be in a band for at least a little while.  Loko at the amp to see what kind of features it offers -- does it have a built in tuner, built in overdrive or distortion, ability to use headphones with it, etc.  All those types of things and more will help in your decision.

To me, the guitar and amp are pretty much the heart of the beginner guitar pack.  The next thing to look at are all the other things that come with it as well.  A gig bag is an excellent bonus especially if you are going to be taking lessons and will be transporting your guitar from your local lesson place and home and back.  Extra strings are also a nice option for that first time that you break one or need replacing due to them being used for awhile.  Finally, if you find one with dvd's or books on learning guitar, this is great because it will give you more options to learn.

The best advice though is to try to get the best thing that you can afford.  Also, buying used is a good idea as well because you can usually get a better quality guitar for less money.  If you are still stumped on what to buy, find a friend who knows guitars or even just ask your local guitar shop owner.  They will be able to make some excellent beginner guitar recommendations.
